The Expedition Climbers Club runs two official trips a year. The Remarkables Ice & Mixed Festival in August and our annual expedition are described below.
There are also informally arranged weekend trips on the EEC Facebook page. Please do flick out a message if you’re heading out into the hills and would like to open it up to other club members. If you aren’t on Facebook but would like a message sent out feel free to email the current events coordinator (Rose Pearson).
Annual Club Expedition 2020 – Baffin Island, Canada – July 2020 – cancelled due to COVID
A four week expedition to Baffin Island for big wall rock climbing with Petrouchka Steiner-Grierson.
This is an alpine big wall trip to the remote Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. This trip is for climbers wanting to repeat big free routes on granite mountains with epic names like “Thor” and “Asgard”, and also for climbers hoping to put up new lines on un-climbed faces or peaks. Ideally you will be comfortable climbing multi pitch trad (long 10+ pitch days or big walls) at least grade 20 and have crack climbing experience. Logistics will be organised for the group with help from the ECC fund, however you will need your own partner, gear, and objectives as this is not an instructional trip. We plan on running this four-week trip in July 2020.

Annual Club Expedition 2019 – Ruth Gorge, Alaska – June 2019
A three week expedition to the Ruth Gorge, Alaska for big wall rock climbing, with Daniel Joll, Alastair McDowell & Kim Ladiges.
The annual ECC sponsored expedition will be to the Kichatna Spires in the southwest Alaskan Ranges. We will fly in to the remote glacier base camp from Talkeetna and spend 3 weeks there during June 2019. Objectives in this part of the season will be rock and big wall climbing routes on the soaring granite spires of the cirque. Inspiring steep faces and moderate long ridges. Uncrowded mountains and the opportunity to climb virgin terrain. Notoriously harsh weather between weather windows will be offset by classic Kiwi vibes at a well-stocked basecamp. You must have your own climbing partner organised and be sufficiently experienced for your objectives to join.
